Government Launches Public Consultation on Licensing for Knife Sales

Get involved and make sure your voice is heard before the consultation closes on 24 Feb 2026.

The UK Government has opened a public consultation on proposed licensing requirements for the sale and importation of knives and other bladed articles. The consultation runs until Tuesday 24 February 2026.

This consultation is entirely separate from the proposed changes to shotgun and firearms licensing, which have not yet been published. However, it is relevant to a significant number of people within the shooting and countryside community, including Registered Firearms Dealers (RFDs), deer stalkers, vermin controllers, pest control professionals and others who sell, supply or rely on knives as part of their work or sport.

The proposals consider whether individuals and businesses selling knives — including online, in-person and via importation — should be required to hold a licence, and what conditions might apply. These include possible police checks, age-verification requirements and packaging or delivery safeguards.

The Home Office is inviting views, experience and evidence from those who may be affected. There is a free-text section within the consultation (section 6) where respondents can submit up to 250 words to explain their perspective, raise practical concerns or provide relevant information.

If you work with knives, sell them, import them, or rely on them as tools of your trade or sport, it is worth being aware of this consultation and considering whether you wish to respond before it closes.
